LAS VEGAS - Three Fighting Illini gymnasts competed in the final round of the 2018 Winter Cup Challenge on Saturday at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Junior Alex Diab came away with an event title on still rings, while senior Brandon Ngai placed third on pommel horse with a two-day total of 29.050.
"I'm really proud of how the guys did today," said associate head coach Daniel Ribeiro. "They were a little banged up after day one and were able to come out and hit seven out of eight routines. We had a strong presence out here at the U.S. National Championships and the guys are hungry to get back home and work in preparation of the second half of the season."
Following Thursday's preliminary round, both Ngai and Diab held second-place spots on pommel horse and still rings, respectively. Ngai posted a 14.400 and finished in third-place in the event, while Diab earned the top score of the field on rings with a season-high total of 14.400 to come away with his 15th career title on the event.
Junior Johnny Jacobson competed in all six events on Saturday night, posting an all-around score of 75.900. After a sixth-place finish on parallel bars on Thursday, the Syracuse, Utah, native totaled a 13.250 in the final round to secure a two-day score of 26.950.
