The Illinois women's tennis team continues its four-match home stand this weekend against Big Ten foe, Iowa, on Saturday morning at 11 am. The Illini then take on Washington at 11 am on Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Atkins Tennis Center. UI finished the 2017 campaign with a 7-4 record in Big Ten play, good for fourth in the league.Â
Illinois Enters Oracle/ITAÂ rankingsÂ
Illinois entered the Oracle/ITA Rankings on February 14 at No. 24. The Orange and Blue had not been ranked in the ITA Top-25 since the 2013 preseason rankings on January 3, 2013. Illinois is currently off to its best start since the 2012 season with a 5-1 record and one of just four teams in the Top-25 with four freshman on the roster.Â
Rabinowitz Earns First Big Ten Tennis Weekly HonorÂ
Fighting Illini freshman Mia Rabinowitz was named the Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced on February 6. Rabinowitz is the first Illini freshman to win a Big Ten weekly award since Emily Wang on March 5, 2004. Rabinowitz clinched Illinois's 4-2 win over No. 11 Texas on Friday night at the Atkins Tennis Center. The freshman defeated Texas's No. 32-ranked Petra Granic, 6-2, 7-6(5) on court three to seal the Illini victory.
Illini Win Thriller Against No. 11 TexasÂ
The Illinois Fighting Illini women's tennis team topped the No. 11 Texas Longhorns, 4-2 on February 2 at the Atkins Tennis Center. The match victory is Illinois's first win over a Top-20 opponent since the last time the Orange and Blue defeated Texas, 4-3 on March 21, 2012. Illinois is off to its best start (4-1) since the 2014 season.Â
Illinois Sweeps Season-Opening Sunday DoubleheaderÂ
The Illinois women's tennis team opened the 2018 dual match season with a pair of wins in Sunday's (Jan. 21) doubleheader at the Atkins Tennis Center. The Illini swept Florida State, 4-0 and then topped Eastern Illinois, 7-0.Â
Illini Freshmen Debut Against Florida StateÂ
All four Illini freshmen made their debut in the season opener in doubles play as Illinois clinched the doubles point with wins on the first two courts. Emilee Duong, Asuka Kawai and Mia Rabinowitz competed in singles against FSU with Kawai clinching the match, 7-6(2), 7-5 on court one.
