CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois men's gymnastics team and head coach Justin Spring have announced the signing of Hamish Carter to the Fighting Illini gymnastics program. Carter will be eligible to compete for the Orange and Blue beginning in January.
"I chose Illinois because quite simply, it's everything I have ever dreamed of as a gymnast," Carter said. "Even before I set foot on U.S. soil, my gut instinct told me this was where I needed to be. I was totally entranced when I came on my recruitment trip through the UIUC campus, the unmatched camaraderie and brotherhood of the boys in Kenney gym, as well as the friendliness I was shown throughout my entire stay."

2018 Accomplishments
- Scottish Floor Exercise Champion
- Bronze All-Around at English Championships (competed as guest so wasn't awarded medal)
- Third place in All-Around at Scottish Championships
- Fifth on All-Around at British Championships
- British Master's Floor Exercise finalist
- British Master's High Bar final silver medalist behind Nile Wilson, beating Olympian Brinn Bevan
- Member of Team Scotland that won Bronze medal at Commonwealth Games Team Final (performed winning floor routine of 14.275 that secured the medal)
- Qualified for All-Around final and finished in sixth place at Commonwealth Games
- Finished just one tenth of a point shy of earning a medal on Floor Exercise at Commonwealth Games
- Qualified for High Bar final at Commonwealth Games
Other Accomplishments
- Selected for the 2016 Great Britain's Junior European Team (unable to compete due to injury)
- Member of the 2015 European Youth Olympic championship team and earned a silver medal on Floor Exercise at the event
"I want to smash on to the scene and showcase 'Great British' gymnastics on the NCAA circuit and to prove that I am a worthy member of the Fighting Illini."
