ARUBA — Branden Comia hit a home run on the first pitch of the game and the Illinois baseball team beat Aruba 5-2 at Winston Stadium. Illinois clinched the first-ever Aruba Cup, presented by Aruba's Minister of Education, Science and Sustainable Development Rudy Lampe.
It was an eventful last day in Aruba with a youth and Special Olympics clinic hosted by the Illini at the stadium in the afternoon. Illinois finished its six-game trip to Curaçao and Aruba with a record of 2-3-1.
Illinois scored four runs via sacrifice hits to pull away from Aruba after Comia's blast. Kellen Sarver, Andrew Dyke and Ryan Haff had sac flies and Casey Dodge scored a run on a squeeze bunt.
Quinn Snarskis went the first three innings, allowing one run on one hit, before five relievers combined to allow only two hits and one run in six innings.
With its games complete, Illinois plans to fly Saturday from Aruba to Chicago. The Illini's regular season begins Feb. 15, 2019.
