CURAÇAO -- On its last day on Curaçao, the Illinois baseball team hosted a baseball clinic for 70 local kids before falling to the Curaçao National Team 8-5 at Tio Daou Ballpark. Curaçao clinched the three-game series 2-0-1.
Kids from all over the island attended the clinic and many stuck around to watch the Illini take an early 2-1 lead on Cam McDonald's two-run homer in the second inning. Curaçao had plated a run without a hit in the first inning before a hit by pitch on Jack Yalowitz and McDonald's high shot to left field put Illinois in front.
Curaçao tied the game in the next half inning and took a 5-2 lead in the fifth before Illinois answered with three of their own in the sixth. McDonald had another RBI and Michael Michalak had a big two-out RBI double to tie the game.
Curaçao pulled ahead for good with three runs in the eighth, two coming on a misplayed squeeze bunt.
Sean Leland (4.0 IP, 2 ER) and Caleb Larson (3.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER) each allowed two earned runs while combining to throw the first seven innings.
Illinois is scheduled for an early-morning flight Wednesday to Aruba, where the Illini will play three games in three days before departing Saturday.
