CURAÇAO -- The Illinois baseball team tied the Curaçao National Team 3-3 in nine innings Monday at Tio Daou Ballpark. Curaçao, playing with current and former professional players, leads the three-game series 1-0-1.
Illinois was trailing 3-2 with two outs in the ninth inning when Ben Troike's pop up looked like it would end the game. Instead it was dropped in the outfield, allowing Illinois to tie the score.
Illinois had a 2-0 lead when Grant Van Scoy's two-RBI double fell in right center in the third. Curaçao answered with a pair of runs in the fifth, the second coming on a solo home run.
Curaçao then took the lead with in the eighth on a wild pitch.
The Illini used five pitchers, beginning with Andy Fisher's shutout start in four innings of work. Zack Jones (2.0 IP) and Garrett Acton (1.2 IP) also had scoreless appearances for Illinois.
Michael Michalak led the offense with three hits, two of them doubles. Michalak led off the ninth with a single.
The two teams are back Tuesday at Tio Daou for the final game of the series. Illinois travels Wednesday to Aruba.
