NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fighting Illini men's golf sits atop the field at the Fighting Irish Classic after two rounds of play on Sunday. The Orange and Blue fired rounds of 270-268 to sit 30-under par (538) in total and set a new 36-hole Illinois school record. Junior Bryan Baumgarten fired rounds of 67-65 to lead Illinois and sit just two shots shy of the tournament lead. Six Illini currently sit among the top 20 individuals, including junior Giovanni Tadiotto and freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart who join Baumgarten among the top 10.
Georgia Southern (-25) and North Carolina (-18) join Illinois among the top three teams heading into Monday's final round of play. Illini tee times are set to begin at 7:40 a.m. and 9 a.m. CT.
"As a team we made a big step today and we accomplished a lot of things that we talk about," head coach Mike Small said. "I saw instances today that show me that we can be a very good team this year, but there are still things that we need to clean up and get better at. It's very encouraging to see a number of guys shoot low scores, which made this a total team effort. I'm excited to see how we come out tomorrow. "
Baumgarten started the day at a steady pace for the Orange and Blue as he posted a bogey-free opening round. He used four birdies to lead Illinois into the second round of play with a score 4-under par. He continued his hot streak into the second round, adding a birdie on his first hole. He posted seven more birdies in the round to negate two bogeys and finish with a 6-under par 65. The mark matches Baumgarten's career-low 18-hole score. He heads into the final round with a total tally 10-under par.
Tadiotto and Dumont De Chassart are tied for sixth individually heading into Monday's final round with total scores 7-under par. Tadiotto opened the day with two birdies in his first three holes, and added another three before the end of the round. He was 3-under par heading into the second 18 holes of the day. After an early bogey in round two, Tadiotto carded a birdie on the fifth hole to get back to even par. He went on a hot streak, posting five-straight birdies in the middle of his second round, which negated two late bogeys on the day.
Dumont de Chassart also started out strongly for the Illini, posting back-to-back birdies on his first two holes. He added another two birdies on the back nine to negate two late bogeys, and closed his first round with another pair of consecutive birdies for a total score 4-under par. Dumont de Chassart shot 3-under par in his second round, making birdie on his first hole and recording an eagle on the 10th hole.
Junior Michael Feagles closed the day at 6-under par in total to sit in a tie for 12th individually. He carded three birdies and an eagle in the opening round. Two bogeys put him at 3-under par before the second round of play. He added another five birdies to his tally in the second round to also shoot 3-under par.
Sophomore Brendan O'Reilly is 2-under par through two rounds of play and tied for 19th overall. He opened the day at even par, and continued on to card two birdies and an eagle in the second round of play.
Making his first appearance as an individual at the Fighting Irish Classic, freshman Noah Gillard heads into the final round of play tied for 15th individually. He shot 1-under par in the opening round, and used five birdies in his second round to negate two late bogeys on the day. He is 4-under par through two rounds of play. Â
Also playing as an individual, sophomore Varun Chopra heads into the final round of play with a total score 1-over par. He is tied for 44th overall.
THE TOURNAMENT
Hosted by the University of Notre Dame, Â the two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at Warren Golf Course (Par 71, 7,020-yards) October 7-8. Monday's round will begin with tee times at 7:30 a.m. CT off of the first and 10th tees. The Orange and Blue are among a field of 15 teams at the Fighting Irish Classic, including Georgia Southern, Iowa, Iowa State, Miami (OH), Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina, NIU, Southern Alabama, Southern Illinois, Toledo, Wisconsin, and host Notre Dame.
