October 12, 2018 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
Peoria, Ill. - The Fighting Illini men's and women's cross country teams each placed third at the Bradley Pink Class held at Newman Golf Course in Peoria on Friday afternoon. The women's team finished with a score of 149 and were led by freshman Madison Marasco, who placed ninth with a time of 20:54.4 in the women's 6K race. In the men's 8K, redshirt senior Dan Lathrop also placed ninth overall, clocking a time of 24:44.5.
Both of the men's and women's top-five team finishers all placed in the top-50 of their respective races. This was the first 6K for the Illini women this season. Sophomore Allison McGrath turned in her second consecutive top-20 finish, placing 16th and recording a personal-best 6K performance of 21:11.5 Sophomore Rebecca Craddock finished in the top-30, placing 28th with a time of 21:26.7. Sophomore Nicki Cast raced to fourth on the team and 47th overall with a personal-best 6K time of 21:46.4. Freshman Emma Milburn finished soon after, placing 49th overall and clocking a 21:48.8 finish.
"The women did a wonderful job," said head coach Sarah Haveman. "They are really following through with race execution and are truly running for each other. Looking at how we have been able to continue to grow with each race is very exciting, and then you begin to look at how we are comprised of all freshmen and sophomores in our top 8 and you can begin to see where we are headed as a program. We have been able to progress like this as a program because we have a process driven program; they've been dialed in to our process for a year and that's what is starting to show."
The men returned to the regular season meet at Bradley for the first time since 2015. Following Lathrop, redshirt senior Billy Magasen raced to second on the team and 30th overall with a time of 25:15.3. Freshman Logan Hall placed next for the Orange and Blue, finishing the race in 25:21.1. Rounding out the Illini top-five were redshirt juniors Zach Dale and Caleb Hummer, who finished 44th and 45th, respectively. Dale clocked a time of 25:27.0, while Hummer recorded a 25:28.4 finish.
"We are proud of how the men ran," Haveman said. "There are a lot of victories on the day that we are excited about. We want to do better and we will. We are going to stay focused on who we are and continue to move forward. Dan Lathrop did a wonderful job today."
Up next, the Illini will host their lone home meet of the season, the Illini Open, on Friday, October 19. The race will take place at the UI Arboretum, with the women's meet beginning at 4 p.m. CT and the men's meet following at 4:40 p.m.
