UI Armory Adds Throwing Cage

Over the last few weeks, a new throwing cage has been installed on the track inside the University of Illinois Armory. The throwing cage will be debuted at the beginning of the 2018 indoor track and field season.

The drop down cage, created by Haldemann-Homee Inc. and manufactured by Porter Athletic in Champaign, extends 25 feet high and 65 feet in distance from the front of the throwing ring. The net is lowered down from the 95 feet high arched roof in the 103 year old Armory building, and is divided into three sections. All sections raise and lower simultaneously or independently of one another.

"The custom throwing cage in the Armory Track will add a level of safety during track & field competitions that is long overdue in the Armory," said Armory facility coordinator Eric Vetter. "The risk of errant throws leaving the throwing sector has nearly been eliminated and we're excited to start using it during the 2018 indoor track & field season."
