COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The Illinois women's golf team sits in third place after the first two rounds of the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational. The Fighting Illini posted a 297 (+9) after each of the first two rounds, and currently have a team score of 596 (+18) at the Scarlet Course of the Ohio State University Golf Club (Par 72, 6,319 yards).
"Today was a combination of a lot of things," said head coach Renee Slone. "There were a lot of great golf shots, a lot of very positive things, but also, as we talked about with the team, we compounded our errors a little bit more today than we have in a while. This golf course is a great test, and patience is extremely important. You don't always get rewarded for shots that are well-executed. Unfortunately, we had some errors that were compounded and resulted in bigger numbers. Today was certainly a learning opportunity, and there are some potential strategy changes for the way we will approach some holes tomorrow to give ourselves better scoring opportunities. All in all, a lot of really good things to take from the day."
Tristyn Nowlin and Chayanid Prapassarangkul lead the Illini, both tied for sixth place at two-over par. Nowlin carded a 70 (-2) in the first round and a 76 (+4) in the second, while Prapassarangkul posted a 74 (+2) in the first round and a 72 (E) in the second round. In a tie for 13th place, Grace Park carded a 76 (+4) in the first round and a 73 (+1) in the second round for a five-over-par score.
Bing Singhsumalee posted a first-round score of 78 (+6) and a 76 (+2) second-round score, good for a 34th-place tie at 154 (+10). After recording a 77 (+5) in the first round and a 78 (+6) in the second round, Swing Liu sits in a tie for 36th at 155 (+11) overall. Dana Gattone's 80 (+8) in the first round and 78 (+6) in the second round puts her in a tie for 44th at 14-over-par.
"Position is paramount for approach shots and for some of these greens," Slone said. "It's important to put yourself in position to get the best angle as opposed to getting closest to the hole. If we find ourselves in a challenging situation, it's important to slow down so we can think through all of our possible options, and determine which one gives us the best opportunity for success at that moment in time."
The final round of the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational will tee off Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. CT.
