Softball Gives Back at Ronald McDonald House
March 24, 2017 | Softball, Hometown Heroes
IOWA CITY, Iowa. – The Fighting Illini softball team took time before their Big Ten Conference opener at Iowa to give back to the Iowa City community, volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House on Friday morning.
The Illini broke into groups and helped with making snack bags and freezer meals for families, organized storage rooms, compiled welcome bags and created cards for those in residence.
Junior Jill Nicklas and Assistant Director of Academic Services for Student Development Kathy Kaler work together to coordinate community service events for the Illini, both in the Champaign-Urbana community and during road trips.
"Doing community service in general is one of our favorite things to do," said junior Jill Nicklas. "The fact that we get to do it at other Big Ten Conference universities is even better. We love the opportunity to make an impact in communities other than our own and find the experience to be rewarding."
About Ronald McDonald House | Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois
When a child is seriously ill or injured, many families must travel far from home to get the specialized treatment their child needs. Sometimes the treatment lasts a day or two, other times it may be weeks, months, or more—that's a long time to be away from your home, your job, and your family.
The Ronald McDonald House of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois serves these families by providing the comfort and amenities they need while their child recovers. Whether they are staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City, or one of our Family Rooms at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids or the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, we keep families close so they can heal together.

The purpose of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois is simple: we keep families close to each other and the care they need, when they need it most.
Through the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City and our Family Rooms in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, we help remove the barriers that separate families while they receive out-of-town treatment for a critically ill or injured child. We're more than just a place to stay—our House and Family Rooms provide the essential comforts of home: warm beds, hot showers, home-cooked meals, kitchen and laundry facilities, a playground, recreation areas, and more.
