JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The Illinois women's golf team placed third at the Briar's Creek Invitational on Tuesday, its second-straight top-three finish. The Fighting Illini carded rounds of 281-296-291 for a final score of 868 (+4) at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek (Par 72, 6,101 yards). The four-under-par score is the fifth-best 54-hole score in program history, and the team's 281 (-7) in the first round set a new program record for best single-round score.
"We played some good golf, and we had some individuals post some low numbers," said head coach Renee Slone. "We just need to have that total team effort, as far as having four strong scores. Clearly we did in the first round. Day in and day out, if we can just bring the four solid scores, that's going to put us in prime position."
Tristyn Nowlin finished in seventh place with a 71 (-1) in the first round, a 73 (+1) in the second round and a 70 (-2) in the final round to finish at 214 (-2). Placing in a tie for 16th, Swing Liu carded rounds of 69-73-75 to finish one-over-par.
Chayanid Prapassarangkul shot a 72 (E) in both the first and second rounds, and then a 75 (+3) in the final round to finish in a tie for 22nd place at three-over-par. Grace Park had a first round score of 69 (-3), a second round score of 78 (+6), and an 80 (+8) in the final round to finish 11-over-par, tying for 60th. Tying for 72nd, Bing Singhsumalee carded rounds of 77-85-71 and ended up 17-over-par.
Competing as an individual, Dana Gattone scored a 75 (+3) in the first round, a 79 (+4) in the second round and a 78 (+3) in the final round to finish 16-over-par and in a tie for 70th.
Florida won the tournament with a score of 849 (-15). Campbell placed second at three-over-par, with Illinois (+4), Miami (+6) and Auburn (+7) rounding out the top five. Michigan State placed sixth at (+8), followed by Texas Tech and Ohio State in a tie for seventh (+14), Louisville (+15), North Carolina and East Carolina in a tie for 10th (+18), Wisconsin (+23), Boston College (+28), Charleston Southern (+32), College of Charleston (+36), Penn State (+44), Long Beach State (+53) and Kansas (+55). The top individual finisher was Maria Torres from Florida, with a 209 (-7).
"Definitely a confidence builder to see red numbers both individually and as a team," Slone said. "We definitely have a few things to tidy up, individually, but the team is eager to get back out and practice tomorrow and work on some things before Kennesaw State."
