COLUMBIA, Mo. - Fighting Illini swimming and diving concluded 2017 competition with the final day of the annual Missouri Invitational on Saturday. Junior diver Madeline Kuhn paced the Orange and Blue, posting the second-best platform diving score (222.00) in program history and helping UI to a fifth-place finish at the invite with a point total of 339.
"We finished up with a strong session," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "This morning we were not very sharp and we were very sluggish. We did not take advantage of a lot of opportunities in prelims and that is something we will talk about and work on for the future."
Impressive performances continued on day three for the Illini, as the team posted 45 season bests and seven lifetime bests. Senior Samantha Stratford and sophomore Monica Guyett earned top-10 finishes on the evening. Stratford finished in fourth place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.35, while Guyett earned a fifth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 16:50.16. Senior Ashley Aegerter also earned a top-10 finish, as the Cross Plains, Wisconsin, native finished in ninth place in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.56).
Host Missouri won the event with a total of 1,319.50, while Nebraska (774.50), Wyoming (486) and Drury (378) helped round out the top five. In sixth place was UC Davis (276), followed by Oklahoma Baptist (107), South Dakota State (100), Iowa State (45), Cincinnati (40) and Nebraska Omaha (2).
"Overall it was a good meet for the team," Novitsky added. "The experience from this meet will allow us to get a fair assessment of where the team is at with training and what we need to keep working on in the coming weeks."
