COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Fighting Illini Soccer closed out a four-game road stretch on Sunday at No. 14 Texas A&M, falling to the Aggies, 2-0. The Illini move to 2-4-0 this season.
"We didn't get the results we wanted, and maybe not the results we earned, but we got better this weekend," head coach Janet Rayfield said. "We made some changes this past week in training, and we showed improvements in each half we played. Despite the outcome tonight, we showed ourselves the level of soccer we can play, and we are ready to get back to work and continue to go after the same goals we set when this season started."
After over an hour of weather delays, the Illini came out aggressive right from the start on Sunday, taking several shots early on. UI was also tough on defense, holding the Aggies without a shot until the 21st minute of the game. Texas A&M took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, however, chipping a shot just over senior goalkeeper Claire Wheatley. Trailing by one at the half, Illinois saw shots from Patricia George, Allison Stucky and Hope D'Addario before the break, and Wheatley tallied one save. The Aggies fired six shots, putting two on goal in the first half.
Illinois came out of the break energized, looking to take over control of the game. The Illini fired three shots in the first 10 minutes of play, two coming from George. Texas A&M, however, did not let up and increased its lead to two with a goal in the 60th minute. That didn't stop the Orange and Blue from attacking as Katie Murray put a shot on goal just a few minutes later. The Illini held Texas A&M without a shot for the remainder of the game, while tallying four more of their own.
Illinois finished with 10 shots overall, four of them on goal. George had a strong offensive effort on Sunday, putting two of her three shots on frame, while Wheatley grabbed two saves.
The Illini return home next weekend, hosting Miami (Friday, Sept. 9) and Evansville (Sunday, Sept. 11) to close out the nonconference slate. tuned to FIGHTINGILLINI.com for all the latest on Illinois soccer.
