Champaign, Ill. -Â Two Illini golfers earned spots in the 2016 U.S. Open field this week, as both Charlie Danielson and Nick Hardy qualified for the prestigious event. Hardy shot 6-under par through 36-holes at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio to earn medalist honors and qualify for his second consecutive U.S. Open.Â
Hardy shot even par through his first round of play before turning it into high gear. He remained at even par through seven holes before making six birdies in the home stretch. Hardy Birdied four of his last five holes to launch himself into the tournament lead.Â
Danielson finished fourth overall, defeating Tony Finau in a playoff for the final spot in the U.S. Open field. The recent Illini graduate shot 1-under par through his first 18 holes and went on to birdie three consecutive holes at the end of the day to pull into the top four.Â
The U.S. Open will be held June 13-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania with play beginning on June 16. The tournament will be aired on FOX, June 16-19 and streamed live at usopen.com. Live scoring can be found here.Â
