Champaign, Ill. -Â The Illinois softball team will take a final break from Big Ten Conference action to welcome in Indiana State in its final home game of the season on Wednesday, May 4, at 5 p.m. CT in Eichelberfer Field.Â
The Illini earned its third-straight Big Ten Conference series win with a sweep of Iowa over the weekend, its first series sweep of the season. The Illini posted a pair of 5-1 wins on Friday night, before taking a 8-0 five-inning win over the Hawkeyes on Sunday afte rain pushed game three from being played on Saturday. Â
Junior Breanna Wonderly earned both wins in the circle on Friday, registering a 1.00 ERA after allowing just one earned run in each contest. She allowed 12 hits total between the two games, including a four-hit, two-strikeout gem in the doubleheader's opening contest. Classmate Jade Vecvanags then pitched all five innings on Sunday, allowing just two hits in the contest and striking out two to earn the shutout victory.Â
Senior Kylie Johnson and junior Alyssa Gunther led the Orange and Blue offensively with a.500 batting average against Iowa, with Johnson posting an 4-for-8 effort including her second triple of the season, to go along with two runs and six total bases. Gunther went 3-for-6 for the series, with four runs and a stolen base, while senior Allie Bauch contributed three RBI. Senior Nicole Tobon added a two-run home run, the second long ball of her career in a pinch hit outing in game two. Â
Illini Notes
- The two Friday night wins gave the Illini 30 wins on the season for the first time since posting 45 victories during the 2010 campaign. Currently, the Illini's 31-win season sits sixth-best in program history and is the best start ever by any first year Illinois softball or baseball head coach.
- The Illini's 31 wins this season also ranks as the third-most wins in the Big Ten behind Michigan (41) and Minnesota (35).
- In the last 10 games, Johnson has paced the Illini with a .393 batting average with 11 hits, four runs and two RBI. Sophomore Annie Fleming and junior Nicole Evans have also registered 11 hits each, with Evans also adding eight RBI and Bauch totaling seven runs.Â
- In the circle, Wonderly has notched a 1.40 ERA with a 6-2 record over the past 10 games, including posting two shutouts wins and eight complete games. During the time frame, she has allowed just 11 earned runs and struck out 21 in 55 innings.
- Wonderly has pitched just under 80 percent of the team's innings in conference action with 102.2 frames and 15 starts, both of which lead the Big Ten. She has started the last 12-of-13 league games - including throwing 55.1 innings-straight in Big Ten play until Sunday. Wonderly's eight wins in B1G play ranks third in the conference, while her 2.86 ERA in Big Ten action ranks sixth-best and her 36 strikeouts sits in a tie for ninth in the league.
- For the season, Wonderly has thrown for 173.2 innings, which ranks fourth-most in the conference, with her 26 starts coming in tied for fourth-most in the league and her 14 wins ranking in a tie for seventh in the Big Ten.
- With 17 triples on the season, the Illini are the co-leaders the Big Ten and rank sixth in the NCAA with 0.34 three-baggers per game. Individually, Fleming leads the Illini, ranks second in the Big Ten and sits 13th in the NCAA with five on the season, while Bauch is right behind Fleming with three triples this season to rank in a tie for fifth in the conference.
- The Illini's 16 triples sets a program record for triples in a season, passing the previous record of 15 in 2005.
- The Illini have also recorded the second-most doubles in the conference with 73 on the season and rank 60th in the country with 1.46 two-baggers per game.Â
- The Illini are the co-leaders in the Big Ten and rank 47th in the nation with 77 stolen bases and a 1.54 stolen base per game average. Johnson leads the Illini and ranks in a tie for seventh with 15 stolen bases on the year.Â
- UI also leads the conference with 634 total bases and ranks in the top four in hits (second, 419), sacrifice bunts (second, 36), hit-by-pitches (third, 40), batting average (fourth, .310) and sacrifice flies (t-fourth, 12).
- Defensively, the Illini have fielded 25 double plays in 2016 to lead the conference and rank 12th in the NCAA with 0.50 double plays turned per game. Individually, Gunther paces the league with 17 double plays fielded, while Bauch ranks in a tie for fourth with 13 and junior Ruby Rivera is tied for 12th with 10 on the season.Â
- Evans has knocked a team-high 11 homers in 2016, upping her career total to 34, which ranks fourth in program history. She also owns a career slugging percentage of .637, which ranks as the highest slugging percengage in program history with four games left in the regular season as well as post-season play.Â
- The Illini's 11-0 five-inning win over East Carolina on March 6 marked an historic occasion for the softball program, as it was the 500th victory in the history of the program.
- The Illini, who have posted eight run-rule victories (Central Michigan, Penn, East Carolina, IUPUI, Seattle, Nebraska, Rutgers, Iowa) this season, are outscoring their opponents 272-199 and are averaging just under five and a half runs per game. Â
- In the Illini's season-opening tournament in Miami, Fla., UI registered a 5-1 win over then-No. 10 Florida State on Feb. 13, with the victory over the Seminoles marking the first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 4 Michigan on April 25, 2014 at Eichelberger Field. It was also just the seventh win against a top-10 foe and just the fourth win against a top-10 team not named Michigan. Â
Scouting the Sycamores
The Sycamores enter Wednesday's contest with a 14-32 overall record, having last seen the field on Friday in a doubleheader loss to Wichita State. The Sycamores have been led this season by seniors Alexa Cavin and Kelsey Montgomery, with Cavin holding a .354 batting average while Montgomery is at .333 with a team high 41 hits. Juniors Brooke Riemenschneider and Kassie Brown are also over .300 at .333 and .313, respectively. Senior pitcher Taylor Lockwood leads the Sycamore pitching staff with a 1.34 ERA with a 4-4 record and 57.1 innings pitched with 39 strikeouts and two shutouts. The team also ranks third in the NCAA in double plays turned per game and have a new school record 28 turned in a single season. Montgomery is also ranked 35th in the NCAA in toughest to strikeout with just five strikeouts in 123 at bats.Â
