LAWRENCE, Kan. – Fighting Illini senior 400m hurdler Cam Viney advanced to his fourth straight NCAA Championships, third in the 400m hurdles, with a victory in his heat at NCAA West Prelims this afternoon.
"We're obviously pleased that Cam has punched his ticket to the NCAA finals," said Head Coach Mike Turk. "He qualified on strength and some experience."
Viney, a 2015 Second Team All-American in the event, won the sixth heat of the NCAA West Preliminary round with a time of 51.81.
Midway through the heat, Viney held a small lead over Kemar Mowatt of Arkansas. However, Mowatt clipped a hurdle coming around a turn, resulting in the Razorback hurdler being unable to finish the race. From that point, Viney cruised to the heat victory.
"It wasn't one of his best races," explained Turk. "I know when the runner next to him went down, he was thrown off balance and missed the next hurdle. He lost a lot of momentum and had to get his composure back quickly to stay in the race."
In the 100m quarterfinals, Devin Quinn was the top Illini performer, clocking 10.56 to place fourth in his heat. Teammate Mo Maat finished in the same heat with a time of 11.17.
Aaron Wilks and Ben Dodds represented the Orange & Blue in the javelin competition this afternoon. Wilks marked 203'11" (62.17m) to finish 30th overall. Dodds finished the competition with a 205'11" (62.77m) mark, placing 26th overall. Â
Track events today were contested as quarterfinals due to the opening rounds being washed out Thursday evening after severe weather blanketed the area. Â Â
