Eugene, Oregon – Fighting Illini men's golf opened play at the 2016 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship on Friday, May 27. Led by sophomore Dylan Meyer, the Illini shot 10-over par through the first round, finishing the day in a tie for 15th. Meyer shot 1-over par for the Orange and Blue to sit among the top-35 individuals. Finishing the day with scores 2-over par, Arkansas and TCU are tied for the team lead after the first day. San Diego State, USC and Vanderbilt are tied for third overall with scores 3-over par.
"It wasn't overly difficult on the course today, you just had to think your way through it," head coach Mike Small said of the round. "I think we're still learning the golf course. We had one practice round out here, and this course requires a lot of local knowledge. We're going to have to learn it as the week goes on and get better as the week goes on. We won't read too much into today, we've got to play better tomorrow but also learn from this round."
Meyer started his day off strong with two birdies early on. He was able to negate a bogey on the front nine and make the turn at 1-under par. He again negated a bogey on the back nine, but closed the day 1-over par.
Senior Charlie Danielson also started his day on a high note, recording back-to-back birdies on the front nine. He ran into some trouble on the back nine, but finished his round 2-over par. Senior Thomas Detry closed the day just one shot back from Danielson, finishing 3-over par.
Sophomore Nick Hardy shot 4-over par on Friday, also starting his day out with two early birdies. Freshman Edoardo Lipparelli birdied two holes on the back nine at Eugene Country Club, but shot 6-over par in the opening round of play.
The Illini are set to tee off at 9:22 a.m. CT on Saturday for the second round of play. Live scoring is available on Golfstat. The Championship is being held at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon, which boasts a par 70, 7,014-yard course.
The 2016 NCAA Men's Golf Championships are being played in a 72-hole format, with just the top 15 teams advancing to the fourth round after 54-holes of play. The individual champion will be crowned at the conclusion of the fourth round of play, and the low eight teams will advance to match play.
