Kohler, Wis. – Sophomore Dylan Meyer led the Illini through the first round of play on Monday, May 16, at the NCAA Kohler Regional as the Evansville, Indiana, native shot 2-under par to put himself in a tie for fifth individually. Illinois is currently 1-over par and in fifth place as a team after battling windy conditions on Blackwolf Run's Meadow Valleys course. Florida and Idaho lead the tournament at 5-under par, followed by Florida State (-4).
"The conditions today weren't easy today, but they weren't difficult either," head coach Mike Small said of the round. "Dylan's finish was strong for the team, he played the last five holes at 3-under which was huge for us. I thought the way we played the par-5s was a little timid today, we need to play with more purpose and conviction tomorrow and get back in this."
Meyer closed the opening round of play with six birdies for UI. He shot even par on the front nine, but used his late birdies to eliminate a few early bogeys. Meyer birdied three of his last five holes of the day.
Seniors Charlie Danielson and Thomas Detry join sophomore Nick Hardy in a tie for 27th overall. The three Illini currently sit 1-over par for the tournament. Detry started his day at even par, adding two birdies before making the turn. Danielson also carded two birdies on the front nine, helping to negate a couple early bogeys on the day. He was 1-over heading into the back nine, and birdied three consecutive holes in the middle of the round.
Hardy played steady throughout the round on Monday. He shot even par for most of the day, before running into some trouble on the 14th hole. Hardy finished strong, however, making birdie on 18 and stay just 1-over par.
Freshman Edoardo Lipparelli is currently 4-over par for the day, he shot even on the front nine, but closed out the day with consecutive bogeys on his final holes.
The NCAA Kohler Regional is being played in a 54-hole format, with second round tee times beginning at 8 a.m. The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18. Hosted by Marquette University, the regional championship is held at Blackwolf Run's 7,404-yard, par 72 course.
