Kohler, Wis. – Fighting Illini men's golf used a 5-under par second round tally to move up three spots on the leaderboard at the 2016 NCAA Kohler Regional on Tuesday, May 17. Illinois is 4-under par in total and currently in second place. Florida continues to lead the tournament with a two-round tally 11-under par, and Florida State (-2) rounds out the top-three teams. Four Illini sit among the top-20 individuals, led by seniors Charlie Danielson and Thomas Detry in a tie for fourth overall.
"Today was a good, solid day," head coach Mike Small said. "At these regionals, we have learned over the years that it takes purposeful, confident golf to get through. Today that was there. Really everyone played well, when you shoot 5-under on this golf course, with this wind, it's good. Mission accomplished today, and tomorrow we need to come out tomorrow and play solid, our standard of golf. Our seniors took the lead today, so I'm anxious to see who is going to do it tomorrow."
Both Danielson and Detry shot 3-under par on Tuesday, finishing with two-round scores of 2-under. Detry shot 3-under on the front nine, birdieing three of his first four holes. He added another birdie on the 11th hole before making bogey late in the round.
Danielson shot even par on the front nine before making back-to-back birdies after the turn. He added a birdie on the 17th hole as well.
Sophomores Nick Hardy and Dylan Meyer are currently tied for 18th individually as the two sit 1-over par after two rounds. Hardy closed the day at even par; he shot 2-over on the front nine, carding two birdies to negate some early bogeys. He added two birdies on the back nine as well. Meyer shot 3-over par for the day, adding three birdies for the Orange and Blue.
Freshman Edoardo Lipparelli started off hot on Tuesday morning as he birdied five holes on the front nine, making the turn with a score 4-under par. He ran into a bit of trouble midway through the day, making consecutive bogeys as he made the turn. Lipparelli is currently 5-over par on the tournament and finished 1-over on the day. He is tied for 50th individually.
