CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Minnesota scored two runs on Jordan Smith's two-out single in the sixth inning to beat the Illinois baseball team, 3-1, Friday night in the first game of a doubleheader. Dan Rowbottom plated the Fighting Illini's only run with a single in the fourth to tie the game, 1-1.
Cody Sedlock (4-2) took the loss in 6.2 innings. He allowed all three runs on nine hits, while walking three and striking out six. Sedlock moved into Illinois' top 10 in a single season with his 90th strikeout of the year.
Rowbottom and McInerney led the Illini's nine-hit attack, while Minnesota totaled 11 hits. The Illini were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
The two teams meet again at 8 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
