@IlliniWTennis Completes Spring Break Sweep

Orange and Blue top Maryland 5-2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Illinois Women's Tennis team completed the sweep of its spring break opponents with a 5-2 victory at Maryland on Sunday morning. The Illini's three-straight wins move them to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten action. Maryland is now 6-8 on the 2016 campaign and 3-2 in league play.

"We were put into some tough situations today, kept our poise and made some very key adjustments to win some sets," stated Illinois head coach Evan Clark. "I was really pleased with the way the team bounced back today after a poor performance on Friday. We were not proud of that performance and we looked more like ourselves today."

Illinois claimed the doubles tally for the third-consecutive match and 12th of the season with wins on the top two courts. UI now combines for a 27-8 record on the doubles courts.

"Like we have done all year, we did a great job of controlling the doubles point and jumping on them early," shared Clark.

No. 46 Louise Kwong and Ines Vias picked up their 17th victory of the season with a quick 6-1 win over the Terps' Stanova/Hovsepyan tandem. The Illini duo is 3-0 in Big Ten action. Jerricka Boone and Madie Baillon put away the doubles point for Illinois with a 6-2 defeat of Maryland's Tour/Sullivan team.

Up 1-0 entering singles play, the Illini would fall in the first two singles matches to finish. Vias fell in a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 3 and Daniela Pedraza Novak lost 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6.

UI went on to win out the remainder of the matches to take home a 5-2 victory from College Park and an unblemished spring break record.

Baillon knotted the contest at 2-2 with a 7-6(5) and 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Maryland's Hovsepyan. Soon after, Kwong locked down a 6-4, 7-5 win in the top slot to put Illinois up 3-2. Freshman Jaclyn Switkes clinched the match for the Fighting Illini with a 7-6(6), 6-2 win at No. 5.

Casati put the finishing touches on the match with a three-set win at No. 2 after falling 2-6 in the opening set. The Illini junior won the final two frames by lines of 6-4, 7-6(5).

"Overall, I am very proud of the team going 3-0 over this very long week on the road," Clark said. "We are excited to get back home to Champaign for a couple weeks."

NEXT UP

The Orange and Blue return to the confines of the Atkins Tennis Center for their next four matches. Next on the slate for Illinois will be the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday April 1, at 6 p.m. CT.
