MIAMI, Fla. – For the second-straight day, the Illinois softball team split its games at the JuiceBlendz FIU Invitational, earning an impressive 5-1 win over No. 10 Florida State behind a dominating performance in the circle from junior Jade Vecvanags and senior Nicole Tobon's first career home run, before dropping its nightcap to tournament host Florida International, 10-8, on Saturday (Feb. 13) at the FIU Softball Stadium.
With their win over the Seminoles, the 2-2 Illini registered their first win over a ranked opponent since 2014.
"We were really excited about the way we came out in our first game against Florida State," said head coach Tyra Perry. "I thought Jade Vecvanags did a great job in the circle. She was confident and carried herself like an ace. We also had great run support all-aournd, including Nicole Tobon's home run, which definitely gave us a big boost. She has been working extremely hard and I am excited to see that pay off and for her to have success."
"The second game we did not fair quite as well, obviously. We were not as aggressive as we needed to be and made a few costly errors. Despite that, we did hit the ball well, but we just could not find the hole, including the last out of the game when Kylie Johnson really stung the ball and the FIU short stop made a tremendous play to stop our efforts. Now we will move our focus on coming out tomorrow against St John's and contining to work hard, play together as a team and hopefully end this tournament with a win."
