URBANA, Ill. – Illinois Women's Tennis is set for the second of four February matches at the Atkins Tennis Center as South Florida comes to town for a Saturday, Feb. 13, match slated for 6 p.m. CT. The USF Bulls enter the contest with a 1-3 record while the Illini are 3-3.
Last season's match between the Illini and Bulls in Tampa, Florida, marked the 10th match up between the two programs. Illinois claimed a 4-3 victory in the sixth meeting between the sides taking place at USF. With the four remaining contests occurring at neutral sites, this weekend's contest will be the first time that Illinois and South Florida will meet in Champaign-Urbana. USF owns a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series.
Prior to this weekend's match, the Fighting Illini faced off against four-consecutive teams ranked in the top-35 in the respective rankings. UI claimed the doubles point in three of the match ups including: No. 17 Texas Tech, No. 30 Virginia Tech and No. 33 Notre Dame.
In the most recent rankings, Illinois' tandem of Louise Kwong and Ines Vias made the move from unranked to No. 50 in the nation's doubles standings. The duo's big jump came following a 6-1 win over the 25th-ranked team in the country, belonging to Texas Tech. Kwong and VIas also held their own against the top-ranked tandem in the country last weekend. At one point in the match the Illini pair owned a 4-1 advantage over Kentucky's Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjadi before the match was called at 4-5.
As a team, Illinois holds a 12-3 record on the doubles courts this dual season.
Looking ahead, Illinois' February homestand will continue as DePaul will visit the Atkins Tennis Center on Feb. 19 before Northwestern makes the trip the following weekend for a Feb. 26 Big Ten showdown.
