In this week's #TBT with Dave Loane, we take a look back at former Illini volleyball head coach Don Hardin! After guiding the University of Louisville for eight successful seasons, including six NCAA appearances, Don Hardin was named the sixth head coach in Fighting Illini history, Jan. 19, 1996. A former assistant at Illinois for the 1987 Final Four team, Hardin led Illinois to six NCAA appearances (1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004 & 2008), including three trips to the Sweet 16 in 1998, 2003, & 2008. Hardin was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the Illini to a 21-9 record, the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a final national ranking of 20th. Illinois finished the 2003 season ranked 15th nationally and had its best season since 1992, earning Hardin his second Big Ten Coach of the Year honor. In 2008, the Illini earned a No. 9 national seed and finished the year ranked 11th in the final poll. He had only one player transfer in 13 seasons while his players posted a near perfect graduation rate.
