"Making Their Mark" is a bimonthly journal entry created by the Illinois Women's Track & Field team that will provide new perspective and insight into the program through the eyes of its athletes. Today's entry comes from freshman distance runner Morgan Schulz of Cary, Illinois. In high school, Morgan broke school records in the 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m (indoor), and 800m (indoor and outdoor).
Hello Illini Fans!
~~I hope all of you are enjoying the last few moments of the holidays surrounded by family, friends, and lots of food! My winter break was very enjoyable, and it allowed me to refresh and recharge heading into the 2016 indoor track & field season. ~~
On December 11, 2015 I ran my first collegiate track & field race. Without a doubt, I was nervous. Being in a brand new atmosphere and competing against some of the best people in the country is quite nerve-wracking, but I was up for the challenge. I felt prepared to execute my race plan, and was excited to get the season rolling with my team.
I don't quite exactly remember how I felt during the race (I tend to zone out when I run), but I do remember what I heard. I saw my teammates lining the track and I heard them chanting my name. Listening to their empowering voices propelled me further as I used their energy and enthusiasm to my advantage. I am very grateful to have such a strong and supportive team and coaching staff that pulled me along and encouraged me during my first college race. So, to my teammates that we're cheering me on during the event, thank you, I needed it!

Now, nearly a month later, our entire Illini family is preparing for our first home meet of the season. It's a great sight when, every morning, I see all of the event groups working hard and putting in some quality blocks of training.
Our typical winter break training schedule consists of a morning and afternoon practice. During these two training periods, we are consistently putting in some quality work that will pay off in the long run (pun intended). It is great to come back to campus with no class so we can focus solely on track for a few weeks. During our off time from morning and afternoon practices, we have a variety of team activities planned- from getting some frozen yogurt to watching a movie at the local theater.
So, as the season progresses and as I notice our team coming together as one, I will think back to my first race in an Illini uniform. Wearing the "Illinois" across our chests doesn't just represent our team, it represents our school, our alumni, family, friends and supporters that were there for us since the beginning of time.
I'm so very proud to be a member of this fighting Illini squad, and I am excited to see where this season takes us . . . STAY TUNED!
