Seattle, Wash. - Illini Soccer fell to 4-1-0 on the season Friday night, Sept. 4, after battling to a 2-1 loss at Washington. Sophomore Kara Marbury netted Illinois' only goal of the night, assisted by Jannelle Flaws. Illinois' four wins to start the 2015 season mark the best start for an Illinois team since the 2011 season when the Orange and Blue also started the year with four victories.
Junior Claire Wheatley recorded a season-high eight saves on the night, stopping eight of the Huskies' 10 shots on goal. Wheatley's season saves tally of 23 currently leads the Big Ten Conference.
The two teams battled through the first half, going into the break scoreless. The Huskies were able to find the back of the next just over two minutes into the second half, however. Washington's second goal came in the 56th minute. Washington fired 19 shots in the game, while only allowing the Illini four shots. UI capitalized on its only shot on goal.
Marbury picked up the pace for the Illini, recording her goal in the 76th minute of the game as the Illini were trailing by two. The score comes as her second of the season as she recorded her first goal against TCU.
Flaws fired three shots for the Illini, raising her season tally to 23, a number that sits third in the Big Ten. She averages 4.6 shots per game so far this season, and also leads the league with seven goals and 17 points. Flaws' assist tonight marks her third of the season.
The Illini continue play at the Husky Nike Invitational on Sunday, facing Portland in a 2 p.m. matchup. The game will be live streamed on the Pac 12 Network's website, and a recap will be posted on FIGHTINGILLINI.com following the game.
