KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the second-straight week, the Fighting Illini women's golf team will head to a two-day tournament with action opening on a Monday, as the team will open play at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships on Sept. 21. Hosted by the University of Tennessee, the competition will take place at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee. Monday will feature the opening two rounds of play from the 5,958-yard, par-70 venue, with the final 18 holes set for Tuesday.
Last week, Renee Slone's Fighting Illini unit finished third at the Minnesota Invitational, led by freshman Bing Singhsumalee in her collegiate debut. Singhsumalee tied the UI program record for lowest single round score in her first round, a mark of 66 (-6). Illinois had four players finish in the top 20 of the event, including Singhsumalee (8th), Stephanie Miller (13th), Dana Gattone (15th) and Chayanid Prapassarangkul (20th). Grace Park was just outside of the top 20, coming in with a share of 27th at the event.
This week, Illinois will travel the same five-member squad. Miller will again be the lone upperclassman competing. The Illini junior will be accompanied by sophomores Gattone, Park and Prapassarangkul, as well as freshman Singhsumalee. Miller and the trio of sophomores are not short on experience, as the group made the trip to every tournament last season.
The 14-team field features four teams found in Golfweek's preseason top-30 rankings, including Tennessee (15), Ohio State (21), NC State (24) and UNLV (29). Other teams that will be in action at the event are Chattanooga, College of Charleston, Florida, Iowa State, Kent State, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, and South Dakota State.
Illinois will see some familiar opponents at the second tournament of the 2015-16 campaign as Kent State, Kentucky and Minnesota all also competed at the Minnesota Invitational. UI finished ahead of all three in the final team standings.
Rounds one and three of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships will both tee off at 7:30 am CT, with shotgun starts. As the opening round comes to a close, golfers will play continuously into the second set of links.
