Former Illini All-America Point Guard Lands in Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks have signed 10-year NBA veteran, three-time All-Star, and two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist Deron Williams.

Williams was a three-year starting point guard for the Fighting Illini from 2003-05, a career that culminated in consensus All-America honors and an appearance in the 2005 NCAA Championship game. Here are some highlights from Williams' career with the Illini:

2004-05 Junior

  • Led Illini to school-record 37 wins, outright Big Ten championship and Big Ten tournament title, NCAA Final Four appearance, National Runner-Up Finish and final AP ranking of 1st
  • Consensus second-team All-American

  • Started all 39 games, averaging 12.5 points and 6.8 assists
  • Led Big Ten and ranked 11th in nation in assists with highest average in school history
  • First player in Big Ten history to lead league in assists during conference play in each of his first three seasons
  • Scored in double figures 25 times, topped by season-high 23 points at home vs. Longwood
  • Recorded double-figure assists five times, led by career-high 12 dimes at home vs. Penn State
  • Double-double in Elite Eight comeback win over Arizona, totaling 22 points and 10 assists
  • Made 3-pointer with 40 seconds left against Arizona to cap a 15-point comeback in final four minutes and send game to OT
  • In final appearance with the Illini, scored 17 points vs. North Carolina in NCAA Championship game
  • Became highest draft pick in school history, selected at No. 3 overall in the 2005 NBA Draft.

2003-04 Sophomore

  • Led Illini to 26 wins, outright Big Ten championship, NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and final AP ranking of 13th
  • First-team All-Big Ten

  • Big Ten All-Tournament team
  • Started 29 of 30 games, averaging 14.0 points and 6.2 assists
  • Led Big Ten in assists with third-highest single-season average in school history
  • Second in league in assist/turnover ratio (2.47)
  • Led Illini and ranked eighth in the Big Ten in scoring
  • Scored in double figures 22 times, with five 20-plus point performances
  • Broke Illini NCAA Tournament scoring record with career-high tying 31 points in second-round win over Cincinnati
  • Also scored career-high 31 points at home vs. Wisconsin
  • Season-high 11 assists at Minnesota

2002-03 Freshman

  • Led Illini to 25 wins, Big Ten Tournament title, NCAA Round of 32 appearance and final AP ranking of 11th
  • Started 30 of 32 games, averaging 6.3 points and 4.5 assists
  • Ranked third in Big Ten in assists (all games)
  • Led Big Ten in assists during conference play with 4.8 apg
  • Second in league in assist/turnover ratio (2.46)
  • Scored in double figures seven times, led by season-high 12 points on three occassions
