Austin, Texas - Illinois junior Allie Bauch was named Capital One Academic All-District® this afternoon, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be eligible for this award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at her current institution.
Bauch is one of 12 student-athletes from District 5 to receive the award and joins seven fellow Big Ten honorees. She is the eighth Fighting Illini to earn Academic All-District honors and the first since 2010. As a First Team selection, Bauch will be placed on the ballot for the Academic All-America® Team, which will be announced later this month.
"Allie competes as hard in the classroom as she does at the field," said head coach Terri Sullivan. "We talk about autographing all of our work with excellence, and she certainly does that. Her commitment to excellence is second to none. Allie represents the University of Illinois with pride and will be met with success in all of her future endeavors."
A mathematics major with a team-leading 3.86 cumulative grade point average, Bauch receives the academic nod just one day after being named First Team All-Big Ten. A two-time NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete and 2014 Academic All-Big Ten selection, Bauch was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar following last season.
Entering the Big Ten Tournament, Bauch ranked in the top 15 in the Big Ten in eight different offensive categories, including ranking second in doubles and third in hits. The junior second baseman finished the year a double shy of the Illini program record, ranking 11th in the nation with 18 two-baggers, while cracking the top eight all time at Illinois in batting average (.399), slugging percentage (.702) and on base percentage (.483). The Schaumburg, Illinois, native also finished in the top 10 all time in single-season runs, hits, home runs and walks, and third in total bases.
Bauch earned her second career weekly award on March 30, being named Big Ten Player of the Week after going 10-for-14 with three doubles, a home run and eight runs scored over four games against No. 20 Missouri and Indiana. With a full year left to play for the Orange and Blue, Bauch ranks in the top five all time in career batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage, as well as sixth in double plays turned and seventh in assists. Bauch put together a 24-game reached-base streak from March 25 to May 2, marking the fourth-longest single-season streak in Illini history, and finished the year by getting on base in 40 of the final 43 games.
