WACO, Texas - Illini junior
Jared Hiltzik's run in the NCAA Singles Championships came to an end in the Quarterfinals with a 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-2 loss to No. 6 [7] Noah Rubin of Wake Forest Saturday afternoon. The 2015 All-American was the first Illini to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals since Kevin Anderson in 2007.
The match was forced to be played indoors due to rain. In the first set, No. 23 Hiltzik battled Rubin to a first set tiebreak, which he would win 9-7. Rubin broke Hiltzik early in the second set to go up 2-0 and would take the second set 6-2. Hiltzik was broken early in the third set and was unable to come back from down two breaks, dropping the third set 6-2.
By reaching the Sweet 16, Hiltzik earned All-American status for the second straight year, becoming the first Illini to earn back-to-back All-American honors since Dennis Nevolo in 2011 and 2012. He's the ninth Illini to garner All-American honors in multiple years.
