Fighting Illini Set for NCAA Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - With the 2015 regular season and Big Ten Championships in the books, the Illinois men's gymnastics team is ready for the NCAA Championships set for Thursday-Saturday, April 9-11. Action will begin from Oklahoma University's Lloyd Noble Center at 7 p.m. CT each day. A pair of team qualifying sessions will take place Thursday, while the Team Finals will be Friday night followed by Event Finals Saturday evening.

LAST SEASON AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Illinois men's gymnastics team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships last season at Michigan. The Illini advanced to the Team Final for the 12th-straight season and then took fourth place. Michigan took home the title followed by Oklahoma and then Stanford. Ohio State and Penn State filled out the Finals field.

ALL-TIME AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Illinois has claimed 10 total team NCAA Championships, with the last title coming in 2012 at none other than Oklahoma. The Illini have registered 55 individual National Champions as well. Most recently, Jordan Valdez won the 2014 high bar title.

INJURY & ILLNESS UPDATE

After a hot start followed by a battle with injury and/or illness, both C.J. Maestas and Bobby Baker are cleared for the all-around competition at the NCAA Championships. Both gymnasts competed in the all-around at the Big Ten Championships placing second (Baker) and third (Maestas).

Junior Fred Hartville, the 2013 vault national champion, made his 2015 season debut on Feb. 7th against Iowa for the Illini. The Atlanta, Georgia, native missed the first month of the season due to a hyper-extended knee. Hartville has now claimed four vault titles this season, including the Big Ten

Illinois has been forced to compete this season without sophomore Chandler Eggleston. The 2014 Big Ten floor exercise champion underwent surgery in early January to repair a ruptured patella tendon. He will redshirt the 2015 season.

RECORD BOOK REVISIONS AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Illinois registered a team score of 436.100 in State College for the sixth best mark in the Illinois record books. The team vault score of 73.950 goes down as the fourth best mark in the books. Jordan Valdez' score of 15.375 on parallel bars is the fourth best tally as well.

LAST TIME OUT

At the 2015 Big Ten Championships, Illinois fell to Penn State by just six-tenths of a point to take the runner-up spot in the Team Finals. Behind Illinois was Michigan followed by Minnesota, Ohio State, Iowa and Nebraska.

Maestas claimed the floor title with a score of 15.400. Hartville won the vault competition turning in a 15.275. Valdez tied for the top-spot on the parallel bars with a career-best score of 15.375.

CAREER TITLE COUNT UPDATE

Maestas currently sits alone in third place on the career rings titles list with 18. The Corrales, New Mexico native is in his third and final year of competition for the Orange and Blue after redshirting the 2013 season due to a triceps injury.

In the all-around, Maestas has claimed 11 titles in his career, which ranks in a tie for sixth place all-time. Maestas has racked up 47 total titles during his time as an Illini, to move into a tie for ninth on the all-time titles list.

Jordan Valdez' high bar title at the Big Ten Team Finals gave him sole possession of sixth place on the all-time high bar titles list with 19. On his Senior Day, Valdez claimed the title against Nebraska, which pulled him ahead of head coach Justin Spring who has 16 career titles on the event.

Hartville has claimed a four of vault titles this season for a career count of 13 titles on the apparatus. He currently resides in a tie for the fifth spot for all-time vault titles.

Mike Wilner has now claimed 12 still rings titles in his career. The mark puts him in a tie for seventh on the career titles list for the event.

Bobby Baker: FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR & GYMNAST OF THE YEAR

After claiming six Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors and a pair of Gymnast of the Week accolades in his debut season with the Illini Baker has been dubbed the Big Ten Freshman and Gymnast of the Year.

The freshman has now accumulated 10 titles in five different events during his debut season with the Orange and Blue, including four all-around titles. He also collected a title in each of Illinois' first seven meets.

Baker is the first Illini to claim both awards in his debut since since Maestas did it in 2012.

ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN

The Illinois men's gymnastics team landed eight members on the Academic All-Big Ten list. Members included seniors Jacob Tilsley, Jordan Valdez and Mike Wilner. Juniors qualifying for the honor were Logan Bradley, Max Mayr and Joey Peters. The sophomores named were Tom Gibbs and Taylor Smith.

ALL-BIG TEN TEAM HONORS

Four Illinois gymnasts were named to the All-Big Ten first team including Baker, Hartville, Maestas and Valdez. Second team honorees were Foster, Peters and Wilner. Maestas was also named as a Sportsmanship Award honoree.
