West Lafayette, Ind. - Illinois men's golf got off to a hot start at the 2015 Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday. The third-ranked Illini will head into the final round of play with a 17-stroke lead. Junior Charlie Danielson (-12) sits tops in the tournament through two rounds as he holds a three-stroke lead heading into Sunday.
"It was a good day for scoring, the course is in great shape," head coach Mike Small said. "Our guys got after it pretty good. In the morning we got it going after the first four or five holes and played some good solid golf. To come back and play the afternoon like we did was a very important step for our team. We always talk about needing to play the second 18 strongly in a day like today. Typically second round scores are a little higher, and today our scores were low. For those three or four guys to earn those eraser scores was important."
After a bogey to start the day, Danielson recovered with six birdies in the first round for a 5-under par score going into the second round. His strong play continued as he notched three consecutive birdies on holes 10-12 in the second round of play. Danielson's performance marks his best of the season so far.
Thomas Detry is holding strong in third overall as he is currently eight strokes under par after scoring 69 and 67 in the first and second rounds, respectively. Detry started the day at even par before snagging a birdie on the eighth hole. He recorded three more birdies on the back nine for a 3-under par round one score. His second round of the day started out hot with a birdie right off the bat. He eagled the fourth hole, making a par 5 in just three shots. Detry followed his eagle with two bogeys, but recovered with three more birdies on the back nine for a 3-under par second round total.
Freshman Dylan Meyer sits just one stroke behind Detry as he is in fourth place overall. Meyer closed the day 7-under par, good for his best performance of the season so far as well. After a 2-under par finish to the first round of play, the Evansville, Ind., native, recorded three consecutive birdies to start the second round. He finished the day with two more birdies in a row for a 5-under par second round total.
Also among the top-10 individuals, senior Brian Campbell is currently 5-under par going into the third round of the tournament. Campbell shot 2-under par through the first round before starting the second round with two birdies in a row. He added three more to to help negate two late bogeys at the end of the day.
Freshman Nick Hardy quickly recovered from a double bogey start to the tournament as he birdied his second hole and finished the first round 2-under par. A 4-over par second round tally gave him a 2-over par total heading into the final round of play. Hardy currently sits 28th individually.
The final round will be played Sunday, beginning with a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start. The Illini are one of 15 teams in the tournament field, joining Purdue, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Northwestern, Kent State, Miami-Ohio, Indiana, Ball State, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Wisconsin, Louisville, Georgia Regents and Southern Illinois.
