Updated Brackets (Day One)

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Fighting Illini wrestling team wrapped up the first day of competition at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and all 10 Illini are still alive in the brackets. Of the ten, two remain in contention in the championship brackets.

No. 1 Isaiah Martinez opened his run toward the 157-pound national title with an 18-2 technical fall over Russell Parsons (Army). The technical fall is the 11th of the season for Martinez, tops in NCAA Division I. He followed that up by pinning Spartak Chino (Ohio) in 1:25 to advance to Friday's championship quarterfinals. Martinez will now face Nick Brascetta (Virginia Tech) for a spot in the semifinals.

After grabbing a 5-3 decision over Connor Brennan (Rider) in his opening bout of the tournament, No. 9 Jackson Morse defeated No. 8 Peyton Walsh (Navy), 7-2, to give Illinois two grapplers in tomorrow's championship quarterfinals. He'll face No. 1 Alex Dieringer (Oklahoma State) with a shot to advance to the semifinals on the line.

Two-time defending champion Jesse Delgado's quest for a third title came to an end on the opening day of competition. After upending No. 8 Tyler Cox (Wyoming), 3-2, in his first match, Delgado dropped a 4-2 decision to David Terao (American) in the second round. Now in the consolation bracket, Delgado will battle to make it to the podium for the fourth time in his career. His first test in wrestlebacks will come against Nick Hermann (Virginia) on Friday morning.

No. 5 Zane Richards also opened his weekend with a win, using a third-period flurry to grab a 12-2 major decision over Jack Hathaway (Oregon State) in his first round match. In his next match, he fell to No. 12 George DiCamillo (Virginia), dropping into the consolation bracket. Richards will face Eric Montoya (Nebraska) tomorrow morning in wrestlebacks. It will be the third time this season the two have met, with Richards winning the previous two meetings.

After upending Ryan Wolfe (Rider), 5-2, in the opening session, No. 11 Zac Brunson dropped a 4-0 decision to Logan Storley (Minnesota), sending him the wrestlebacks. He will now have to battle his way through the consolation bracket, starting with a match against Jadaen Bernstein (Navy) tomorrow morning.

Jeff Koepke pulled an opening round upset over No. 16 Elliot Riddick (Lehigh) with a 5-3 win in sudden victory. His second-round match pitted him against No. J'Den Cox (Missouri), which Cox won 6-2. Koepke will face Jake Smith (West Virginia) in his first match of session three.

After suffering opening round losses, Steven Rodrigues, Kyle Langenderger, Nikko Reyes and Brooks Black each bounced back with wins to remain in contention in the consolation brackets. Rodrigues upended Tyler Smith (Bucknell), 11-4, Langenderfer pinned Michael Depalma (Kent St.) in 4:48, Reyes took down Jacob Kasper (Duke), 8-2, and Black snuck by Nick Tavanello (Ohio State), 6-5.

Through two sessions of wrestling, the Illini are in eighth place with 16.5 points. Ohio State leads the team standing with 23.0 points through the first day. Illinois will look to close the gap during tomorrow morning's third session. Action resumes at 10 a.m. CT.
