Five Illini Gymnasts Claim Titles in Loss at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In the regular-season finale, the Illinois men's gymnastics team fell to the two-time defending national champion, Michigan, by a final reading of 435.750-428.500 in Ann Arbor. The Fighting Illini moved to 11-3 with the loss and finished 9-1 in regular season Big Ten action.

"We had good fight throughout a meet that didn't seem to go our way, ever," shared head coach Justin Spring.

As the visitors, Illinois opened on the pommel horse, posting a team mark of 70.150. Logan Bradley posted a 14.500 to earn a share of the title, his second of the season on the event. Bobby Baker and Jacob Tilsley tied for fourth place with marks of 14.150. Matt Foster finished sixth with a reading of 14.100.

Heading to the second event, floor, down nearly four points, the Illini were able to cut the Wolverine advantage by two full points over the next five routines. C.J. Maestas came up big for Illinois, posting a 15.850 to earn the 46th event title of his career to knock Daniel Ribeiro off of the top 10 all time titles list. Joey Peters tied for fifth on the event with a score of 14.750. Taylor Smith finished with a mark of 14.100.

Senior Mike Wilner claimed the top spot on the still rings board with a score of 15.800 to earn his fourth title on the apparatus of the season. Tom Gibbs tied for fourth with a reading of 14.700, the best mark of his career. Baker tied for sixth on the event after registering a 14.600.

Fred Hartville was five-hundredths of a point away from his fourth vault title of the season, however, a pair of Michigan gymnasts posted 15.200 on the event to push Hartville to third place with a 15.150 reading. Gibbs tied for fourth on the event with a 14.750 mark. Maestas and Baker shared the sixth spot with readings of 14.650.

Maestas was the top Illini finisher on parallel bars with a reading of 14.500 for a fifth place finish on the event.

Jordan Valdez, the reigning NCAA high bar champion, collected another title on the event after registering a 15.350 on the afternoon. He now holds a share of the sixth spot on the career high bar titles list with 18. Baker turned in a reading of 14.650 to claim the third spot, while Max Mayr finished with a 14.350 for sixth place.

Baker snagged his fourth all-around title of the season with a score of 85.600. The freshman was the fifth Illinois gymnast to collect a title on the day, holding the Wolverines to just three honors.

With the 2015 regular season in the books, Spring's crew will take next weekend off before heading to Penn State in search of a Big Ten title. The Big Ten Championships are slated for March 27-28, with both days beginning at 6 pm CST.

"We will not be full strength [at the Big Ten Championships], but I think we will be a great team in two weeks," Spring said.
