NORMAN, Okla. - Illinois and Oklahoma, the top two teams in the nation, met in Norman, Oklahoma, on Friday, Feb. 27, in a non-conference dual meet. No. 1 ranked Oklahoma and No. 2 ranked Illinois both entered the competition with a perfect 10-0 slate on the 2015 campaign. The Illini were handed their first loss of the season in a 457.300-434.200 decision at Oklahoma. This dual meet used the five-up, five-count scoring format.
"We got outcompeted and were a little outmatched today," said head coach Justin Spring. "We had a lack of aggressiveness today and were guilty of a lot of little changes that resulted in costly, conservative mistakes. It was difficult when they [Oklahoma] had such an awesome meet, we lost a little of our competitive fire."
Redshirt-junior C.J. Maestas competed in just one event on the evening due to illness. In the floor competition, Maestas' lone event, he turned in a 15.900 performance to earn a piece of the event title. The other Illini gymnast to earn an event title was Bobby Baker who took home the all-around crown with a mark of 86.200.
Illinois opened the evening on pommel horse, turning in a team-effort of 71.800. Baker led the Orange and Blue with a 14.750 carding. Brandon Ngai produced a career-best 14.550 reading.
On floor, the Illini turned in a record-setting 74.900 team score. Maestas scored a 15.900, topping his previous career-best mark of 15.600, to earn a share of the title with Oklahoma's Colin Van Wicklen. Baker carded a 15.100 in the event to secure sixth place.
In the third event of the meet, Spring's unit turned in a 73.250 team mark on vault. Fred Hartville was the top Illini finisher as he locked down second place with a 15.500 reading. Baker took fourth with a score of 15.150.
Next, on rings, Mike Wilner led the way for the Northerners with a 15.550 outing. Joey Peters shared fourth place in the event after scoring a 15.250. Max Mayr tied his best mark of the season with a 14.800 effort.
Mayr turned around and led Illini on the high bar with a career-best 14.900 for sixth place. Baker tied his career-best mark of 14.500 in the event.
On the final event, parallel bars, Peters produced a 14.950 effort to snag fourth place. Jordan Valdez was close behind with a mark of 14.900 for a fifth place finish.
"This team [Illinois] hadn't really been challenged yet, and I know that the guys are already fired up to get back at it," Spring said.
Next weekend, the Illini host their final two meets of the season when Stanford and Nebraska come to town. Illinois will face the West Coast crew on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. CST. Sunday will serve as Illinois' Senior Day as the action between the Illini and Huskers is slated for a 2 p.m. start. Both events will take place at Huff Hall.
