Rosemont, Ill. - Fighting Illini redshirt senior Jannelle Flaws was named to the All-Big Ten second team, as announced by the Big Ten Conference Office on Friday, Oct. 30 . The two-time Big Ten Forward of the Year leads the league with 11 goals this season and her 54 career goals are the most in Illinois history.
Flaws was twice named Big Ten Offensive Player of the week this season, with the most recent honor coming on Oct. 29 after leading the Illini to a 3-1 victory over Minnesota and the No. 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
Flaws had a busy season as she became the all-time leader on several of Illinois' career lists. She broke Tara Hurless' career goals record in style early in the season. On Sunday, Aug. 30, Flaws notched a hat trick in a span of just nine minutes against Saint Louis to break Hurless' record of 47 career goals. Flaws finished the game with 50 career goals.
Flaws holds the school records for career goals (54), shots on goal (169), points (122) and shots (346). In Big Ten games, she owns the most goals (30) and points (66) in school history.
Flaws was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list this year, and was named a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch and Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI Second Team honoree.
Senior Anastasia Medellin was also honored by the league as she is one of the league's Sportsmanship Award honorees for the season. The students chosen for the Sportsmanship Award are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
The Illini continue the 2015 season at the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal round on Sunday. Illinois is slated to face No. 1 seed Penn State at 2 p.m. CT in University Park, Pa. Stay tuned to FIGHTINGILLINI.com for more information as the Illini continue postseason play.
