CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Paul Ruggeri, a 2012 Illinois graduate, will represent the U.S. Men's Senior National Team at the World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, from Friday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 1. After three years of being named an alternate for the team, Ruggeri will make the trip as one of the six U.S. team members.
Team USA is in search of a top-eight finish at the event to automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Additionally, any individual event medalists who are not on a qualifying team to the Olympics or Olympic Test Event will advance to the 2016 Olympics. Countries ranked nine through 16 in the team rankings advance to the Olympic Test Event next April, where four more teams will qualify for Rio.
The men's squad includes three members of the 2014 World bronze-medal team and a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist. The U.S. men's team is comprised of: Chris Brooks of Houston/Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center); Marvin Kimble of Milwaukee, Wis./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center); Danell Leyva of Miami, Fla./Team Hilton (Universal Gymnastics); Alexander Naddour of Queen Creek, Ariz./Team Hilton (USA Youth Fitness Center); Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center); Donnell Whittenburg of Baltimore, Md./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center); and Brandon Wynn of Voorhees, N.J./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center).
While Ruggeri didn't earn the automatic bid by finishing first or second in the all-around and claiming a top-three finish on three events, he was selected to the squad for his strength on high bar, vault and floor exercise. The former Illinois men's gymnast finished fifth on floor exercise, second on vault and second on the high bar overall at the P&G Championships.
At the World Gymnastic Championships, five gymnasts will compete on each event in qualifying, with the lowest score being dropped. In the team finals, however, only three gymnasts compete on each apparatus and all three scores will count, making it crucial for countries to build lineups that give the maximum scoring opportunities on all six events.
The previous Illinois gymnast to make the U.S. World Team was none other than Ruggeri's collegiate coach, and Illinois great, Justin Spring. A member of the worlds team in 2007 and then the Olympic squad in 2008, Spring was the last Fighting Illini gymnast on the worlds/Olympic roster, as world championships are not held Olympic years.
