URBANA - Michelle Dasso's Illinois women's tennis team opened the 2015 dual season with a pair of victories over in-state rivals UIC and Illinois State. The day began with the Orange and Blue facing the Flames where the Illini came out on top of a 7-0 decision. In the afternoon, Illinois hosted Illinois State and came away with another 7-0 victory.
In the first contest, Melissa Kopinski and Louise Kwong teamed up to defeat UIC's Altansarnai/Manole duo 6-3 while Julia Jamieson and Madie Baillon downed UIC's Zuzu/LeBlanc tandem by a 6-2 decision.
On the singles side the Illini swept the board picking up six straight-set wins. Kopinski beat Mebuke 7-5, 6-3 at number one singles. Kwong took down Altansarnai (6-1, 6-0) and Jerricka Boone topped Manole (6-4, 6-2). Illinois newcomers Grace Tapak, Jade Hilton and Baillon picked all picked up singles victories in their Orange and Blue dual season debut.
The Flames fell to a 0-2 start with the loss at the Atkins Tennis Center. Illinois is now 10-0 all-time against UIC.
In the second contest of the day, the Illini did not drop a set on their way to the 7-0 victory, which moves the program's all-time record to 31-8 against the Redbirds.
Baillon, a sophomore-transfer from Illinois State, teamed up with Alexis Casati for a 6-4 win over Gercar and Shulman. Boone and Hilton collected the other doubles victory for the Illini as they bested Parchowska and Scudiero 6-1.
At number one singles, Casati took care of Ilves by a 6-3, 6-4 mark. Kwong and Hilton both won by a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Haycock and Scudiero, respectively. Tapak defeated Illinois State's Gercar 6-1, 6-2 while Jamieson turned in a pair of 6-2 sets over Parchowska. The final contest to finish was number three singles where Boone topped Shulman in a 6-3, 7-6(4) fashion to preserve the straight-set victory.
The Redbirds started the season 0-1 with the loss to Illinois.
Illinois will head to Lexington, Kentucky, to take on the Wildcats on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Action is set for noon CST. The Illini are 0-1-1 all-time against Kentucky.
