UCF Quad Tournament Results
ORLANDO, Fla. - Michelle Dasso's Illinois women's tennis team wrapped up its 2015 spring-opener over the weekend at the UCF Quad Tournament in Orlando, Fla. from Saturday, Jan. 17 through Monday, Jan. 19. The Illini picked up 25 total wins over the tournament with 17 victories in singles competition and eight coming on the doubles side.
"This was a very productive trip for us on many levels," shared Dasso. "It was great to have everyone back together especially with our new assistant Evan Clark. I can already tell he is going to help our program tremendously. The team played with very good composure, fighting spirit and used their fitness base to make improvements each day and stay healthy. We are very excited to kick off our dual match season at home this weekend."
Illinois began the spring season on Saturday facing off against Florida International in singles. Senior Julia Jamieson along with Madie Baillon and Louise Kwong picked up the Illini's singles victories on the day. Kwong was able to take care of FIU's Nerma Caluk 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-3 while Jamieson topped Valentina Briceno 6-1, 7-5. Baillon took down Aimee Tarun of Iowa 6-3, 6-2 on the day.
The Fighting Illini took three doubles wins over Iowa. Jerricka Boone in combination with Alexis Casati defeated Annette Dohanics and Shelby Talcott 6-3. Baillon and Kopinski teamed up to beat Morven McCulloch and Anastasia Reimchen 7-5. Kwong and Grace Tapak bested Zoe Douglas and Katie Zordani 6-4 on the afternoon.
On the second day of the tournament Illinois met up with Iowa in the singles competition. The Illini took all nine contests over the Hawkeyes on the day. Casati, Kopinski and Emily Barretta each beat their opponents in two sets. Louise Kwong, Baillon, Tapak and Boone all fell in the first set of their match but came back to pick up victories. Jade Hilton and Jamieson both fell in the second set of their matches but came back in the third for Illini wins.
Dasso's crew was able to take two of three doubles contests on the afternoon as Kopinski and Kwong bested the Baptista/Cesarini duo from UCF 6-3. Boone and Jamieson knocked off Matias and Mendell 7-5. Tapak and Hilton took on the Silver/Tarun duo from Iowa and came away with a 6-4 win.
Monday, the final day of the tournament, brought five more Illinois wins in singles competition over UCF. Casati, Kopinski, Boone, Jamieson and Hilton all tallied wins on the day.
Illinois took a pair doubles matches over FIU on Monday. Kopinski and Kwong defeated Caluk and Koroleva 6-3. Boone and Baillon won their match 6-0 against Briceno and Brozovich.
The Illini return home this weekend to open the dual season against UIC and Illinois State. Play is set for Sunday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. CST against UIC followed by the Redbirds at 3 p.m.
