FLUSHING, N.Y. - The USTA announced that Jared Hiltzik will replace Mitchell Frank, of the University of Virginia, as a competitor in the inaugural American Collegiate Invitational at the US Open.
The winner of the American Collegiate Invitational, which is held September 4-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, will receive a main draw wild card entry into the 2015 US Open if the champion is No. 250 or better. Otherwise, the winner will receive a 2015 US Open qualifying wild card. The champion will also earn wild cards into two USTA Pro Circuit events. The runner-up will receive one wild card to a USTA Pro Circuit event.
Hiltzik joins the eight-player field which includes Greg Andres (Notre, Dame, Richland, Mich.), Marcos Giron (UCLA, Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Peter Kobelt (Ohio State, New Albany, Ohio), Mackenzie McDonald (UCLA, Piedmont, Calif.), Alex Sarkissian (Pepperdine, Glendale, Calif.) Ray Sarmiento (USC, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Clay Thompson (UCLA, Venice Beach, Calif.).
Hiltzik will get an opportunity to compete against the members of the USTA Collegiate National team, which include Giron, Frank, Thompson, McDonald, Sarkissian and Kobelt.
Administered by the USTA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the USTA Collegiate Team is an elite training program for the nation's best collegians. It is designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the year. The program began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA. Several current and former professionals spent time as a member of prior USTA Collegiate Teams including Jon Isner, Bob and Mike Bryan and James Blake.
