CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fresh off a victory over a loaded field at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational, No. 6 Illinois will aim for its fifth-straight title at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate Sept. 20-21 at the par-71, 7,155-yard Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Indiana. The Orange and Blue have won the tournament the last four times it has been held - 2013, 2012, 2010 and 2009 - including a commanding 33-shot triumph last season.
Illinois will take on a field that consists of No. 15 Houston, Kentucky - which received votes in the preseason Golf Coaches Association of America poll - host Indiana, Akron, Ball State, Chattanooga, Eastern Michigan, Florida, IUPUI, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Penn State, South Alabama and William & Mary.
The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Saturday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. CT, followed by a single round Sunday with tee times off Nos. 1 and 10 beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
"We like the golf course," Illinois head coach Mike Small said. "We've played it well and we know how to approach it. But now we've got three freshmen who need to learn it with Nick (Hardy) and Dylan (Meyer) playing for our team and Spencer (Reed) going as an individual. It's a good golf course. It requires some thinking and some patience, and it can really frustrate you. But for some reason we've played well there, and hopefully we'll continue that."
After posting an 11-shot win last weekend at Olympia Fields, the Illini will reconfigure their lineup as a result of All-American Thomas Detry returning from his appearance in the World Amateur Team Championship in Japan. That will move Reed out of the team lineup and into an individual role, as Illinois will field a five-man squad of senior Brian Campbell, juniors Charlie Danielson and Detry, and freshmen Hardy and Meyer. With Meyer sharing medalist honors at OFCC, four of the five have earned individual titles in college.
"To put Thomas back in the mix makes us stronger on paper," Small said. "And I think it will. He's a good teammate and a good player. Obviously, Dylan did a great job (last weekend). To win that event is strong; there are some top players there. Nick played great, too. Dylan was more consistent and Nick had some flashes that were really good. They're both going to be really good college players. And Spencer had some good moments. That last round, a 73, is a strong finish for a guy who hasn't played a lot of golf. We're going to get him playing as much as we can, but he showed some positive things. They learned a lot and I'm sure they'll keep getting better and better."
