Round 2 Results
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - No. 6 Illinois moved into second place after the second round of the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational on Saturday, thanks to the fourth-best team score of the day, a 10-over-par 290, which left them eight strokes behind tournament leader Baylor. Freshman Dylan Meyer moved into a share of the individual lead with an even-par 70 at the par-70, 7,290-yard course, and shares the lead with Stanford's Maverick McNealy and Baylor's Kyle Jones at +2 overall.
Freshman Nick Hardy sits tied for 12th at +5 overall and junior Charlie Danielson is tied for 18th at +7. Senior Brian Campbell battled his way back up to a tie for 40th with a 1-over 71 on Saturday and is +11 overall. Freshman Spencer Reed is tied for 54th at +14 after a +5 on Saturday.
Illinois is five shots ahead of third-place Florida State (+29) and seven up on fourth-place Oklahoma State (+31). Stanford, Colorado and Virginia Tech are tied for fifth at +33.
"It was a good, solid day overall," Illini head coach Mike Small said. "The golf course played differently today. It was cooler with a little breeze and the greens were fast. I thought we handled it well for most of the day. We had a really good look early on and we were a good distance under par the first six or seven holes. But then the tough part of the golf course got us on the back nine and we didn't finish very well, which is something we pride ourselves on.
"I'm very encouraged by Dylan Meyer and Brian Campbell, those two guys carried us today, which was great. Nick Hardy has played a lot of good golf. We're a young team. With the three freshmen trying to find their way and the two veterans trying to get acclimated, these first couple of weekends are all about developing an identity. Second place with a chance to win it tomorrow is where you want to be. We put ourselves in position to finish well tomorrow and if we can play all 18 holes tomorrow and finish it off instead of struggling coming in, we'll have a chance."
Meyer played steadily all day, erasing a bogey on No. 3 with consecutive birdies on Nos. 5 and 6. He added another on the par-3 13th to get to -2 but bogeys at 14 and 18 left him even for the day. Hardy started hot with birdies on his first two holes but fell back to even after bogeys on Nos. 5 and 10. He ran out of steam at the end of his round, finishing double-bogey, bogey, bogey to end +4 on the afternoon.
Campbell posted a 1-over 71 thanks to four birdies and five bogeys. He birdied Nos. 4 and 7 to jump to -2, but bogeyed the next four holes. He recovered with a birdie on No. 13 but bogeyed 14. He finished with a birdie at the par-4 17th. Danielson was solid throughout the round but couldn't roll in any birdie putts, carding three bogeys and a double-bogey on his way to a 75. Reed also posted a 75, carding two birdies but seven bogeys.
The final round of the tournament gets underway Sunday at 8 a.m.
