WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 8 Illinois shot 3-under-par in Sunday's final round but finished second by just one stroke after Iowa posted a 14-under-par 274 to win the Boilermaker Invitational at the par-72, 7,259-yard Kampen Course. Senior Jonathan Hauter tied for sixth at -1 after a final-round 71, while all five scoring Illini players finished in the top 16.
"We played well today, just not well enough," Illinois head coach Mike Small said. "When you don't shoot a score over 75 on that golf course the whole weekend, that's solid golf. Now, we didn't get the eraser score that we were looking for and Iowa did. When Iowa shoots 14-under-par in one round, you've just got to tip your hat.
"All in all, we played well. We had some situations where we didn't finish as well as we would've liked, but sometimes you can get picky as a coach. In reality, you shoot 1-over as a team on that golf course and that isn't bad. There are things we can improve on, but for the most part, we just need to keep doing what we're doing. Our depth is our strength and we'll continue to work on our games and strive for those eraser scores."
Sophomores Thomas Detry and David Kim tied for 11th at +2 overall, junior Brian Campbell finished 15th at +3 and sophomore Charlie Danielson tied for 16th at +4. Junior Alex Burge, who was playing as an individual, finished tied for 49th at +10 after a 77 on Sunday.
Kim was the low Illini on the day, posting a 2-under-par 70 to tie for 11th place at +2 overall. Kim got as deep as -3 twice during his round, through nine holes and through 14, but a double-bogey at the par-3 17th dropped him back to 1-under. He recovered with a birdie at the par-3 2nd hole, his final hole of the round, to finish with a 70.
Hauter started on the first hole and made the turn at -2 after birdies at 3 and 4. He added another on the par-5 10th to get to -3, but bogeyed Nos. 11 and 12. He birdied the par-4 15th but a bogey at the par-4 18th left him with a 71.
Both Detry and Campbell posted even-par rounds on Sunday. Detry birdied the par-5 6th and No. 10, and stood at -2 through 11 holes. But bogeys on Nos. 13 and 18 left him with a 72. Campbell had a much more colorful scorecard, posting seven birdies on the day but equaling them with five bogeys and a double-bogey. He did finish strong, though, recovering from consecutive bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 with a birdie on No. 2 to finish his round.
Danielson never got it rolling on Sunday, making three bogeys against only one birdie on the front nine to turn at +2. He birdied No. 10 but bogeyed the par-4 12th. A birdie at the par-4 15th got him back to +1 but he double-bogeyed No. 16 to finish with a 75.
The Illini return to action May 2-4 when they shoot for their sixth-straight Big Ten championship at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Ind.
