Roadrunner Open Results

FRESNO, Calif. - On Sunday, the Fighting Illini wrestling team had a successful final day on its California road trip. A trio of Illinois grapplers won individual titles at the Roadrunner Open, while six others made the podium.

Isaiah Martinez was the first member of the Orange and Blue to win a title, wrapping up the road trip with a perfect record at 157 pounds. Martinez began his day by pinning Menlo's Sam Duchene in 1:09. He followed up that performance with a 23-9 major decision over Paul Fox in the quarterfinals. An 18-13 win over Alex Elder of Oregon State secured a spot in the final for Martinez. In the first-place bout, Martinez upended Max Hvolbek of Stanford, 9-6, to win the 157-pound weight class.

In the 165-pound weight class, Jackson Morse followed the lead of Martinez, winning the title over Stanford's Jim Wilson, 10-4. Morse's run to the title began with a pin of Tony Magalhas of Sierra in just 55 seconds. A 12-7 victory over North Carolina's Ethan Ramos sent Morse to the semifinal, where he pinned Travis Berridge of Cal Poly to advance to the final.

Zac Brunson was the third Illini grappler to win his weight class on Sunday. He beat Bryce Hammond of Bakersfield, 7-6, in the 174-pound final, the second time that Brunson beat the 2014 All-American in three days. Brunson pinned Ali Alshujery of Oregon State in 2:10 in his first match of then day. He then defeated Bakersfield's Jesus Ambriz, 9-1, before upending Purdue's Jacob Morrissey, 10-1, to advance to the championship match.

Three other Orange and Blue grapplers advanced to the final bout of their respective weight classes but fell one win short of a title. Kyle Langenderfer (149), Nikko Reyes (184) and Brooks Black (HWT) each had their perfect tournament records come to an end in the day's final bouts.

Jeff Koepke earned a fourth-place finish the 197-pound bracket after losing to Matt Williams of Bakersfield in the third-place match. Christopher Lopez defeated Purdue's Tyler Kral, 5-1, in the fifth-place match at heavyweight, while Dominic Olivieri fell in the 133-pound fifth-place bout, 11-2, to Kyle Ayersman of Purdue.

Logan Arlis (141), Matt Nora (165) and Danny Hicks (184) each participated in the tournament but were eliminated before the place-winner matches.

The Illini will be off for nearly two weeks before welcoming Lehigh to Huff Hall on Nov. 29. That match between the two top-20 squads will begin at 11:00 a.m. CT.
