Round 2 Results
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Fighting Illini held on to their fourth-place standing through the second round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, despite tougher course conditions on Monday at the par-72, 7,200-yard Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. As a team, Illinois carded a team score of 289 (+1) on a day that saw 10 of 15 teams in the field shoot even par or worse. That leaves the Fighting Illini at -11 for the tournament, 15 shots behind first-place Vanderbilt.
"As a coach, you learn to take the good with the bad," Illini head coach Mike Small said. "We've had a lot of good lately, so I'm not going to read too much into this. We didn't have a bad day, but today we were a little flat. We just didn't have the edge that we needed today to move up the leaderboard. The course was playing a lot more difficult - they decided to tuck the pins - which usually sets up well for us, but we just weren't as sharp around the greens and with our approach shots. But we're going to move forward and I'm confident that we'll come out sharper tomorrow.
The same five teams that composed the top five spots after the first round remain in the top five, but No. 12 Vanderbilt (-26) overtook No. 7 Texas Tech (3rd; -22) and No. 2 Florida State (2nd, -24) for the top spot. Meanwhile, No. 47 North Florida (-10) remains in the fifth spot, just one stroke behind the Orange and Blue.
Illinois teammates Charlie Danielson (-5) and Dylan Meyer (-5) had the best second rounds for the Illini, with Danielson posting a 2-under 70 and Meyer carding a 1-under 71. Danielson battled throughout his round, overcoming bogeys on Nos. 8 and 10 that dropped him back to even par with birdies on Nos. 14 and 16. Meyer was steady throughout, standing at 2-under through 16 before making his first bogey of the day at the par-3 17th.
"Dylan played solid all day, he drove it really great" Small said. "He was on point all day. Charlie didn't have his best stuff today, but he really persevered. Those two guys held us up. But I'm confident that we have a good team and that all five of our guys can put up good scores tomorrow."
Danielson and Meyer are tied for 12th place on the individual leaderboard, while Brian Campbell (+1) and Nick Hardy (+1) are teid for 34th. Thomas Detry had a rocky second round, carding a 6-over-par 78 to fall into a tie for 50th after starting the day tied for 16th.
Illinois tees off hole No. 1 at 7:50 a.m. CT alongside North Florida and California in Tuesday's final round.
