#8 Illini Take Down #3 Ohio State

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team captured a 428.450-425.450 victory over Ohio State in a head to head competition Sunday afternoon at Huff Hall. The Orange and Blue clinched the win on high bar in the sixth and final rotation after being neck-and-neck with the Buckeyes.

The Fighting Illini beat OSU on floor 72.500-70.500. Illinois took three of the top five spots in floor exercise, with Chandler Eggleston leading the way in first with a score of 15.300, his career high as well as the team's high for the season. C.J. Maestas and Fred Hartville followed in third and fourth place, respectively. Maestas scored a 14.650, and Hartville scored 14.550, his season high.

In the second rotation, the Orange and Blue beat Ohio State 71.950-71.150, taking second, third, and fourth, and being beaten by Ohio State's Michael Newburger, who is ranked No. 1 on pommel horse. Jacob Tilsley placed second with a score of 14.800, surpassing his career high of 14.600. Matt Foster followed in third with 14.700, setting his career high. Chad Mason won fourth with his score of 14.500.

On still rings, Illinois defeated the Buckeyes 72.500-70.650. C.J. Maestas earned his second rings title of the season with a score of 15.400. Illinois took four of the top five slots, with Max Mayr and Cameron Rogers tying for third (14.500) and Tom Gibbs coming in fifth with a career high score of 14.400.

Illinois won their fourth event over Ohio State on vault, winning 73.450-72.300. Chandler Eggleston and Fred Hartville were close for the vault title, with Eggleston narrowly beating out Hartville 15.100-15.050. Maestas took fourth in the event, scoring 14.600.

The Illini lost their first event on parallel bars, OSU leading 71.300-68.100. Parallel bars was a weaker event for the Illini, with Jordan Valdez and Cameron Rogers being the only Illinois gymnasts in the top five. Valdez took second with a 14.400, and Rogers placed fifth with 14.150.

High Bar was a close race between the two teams (69.950-69.550), with Illinois battling until the last minute. The Fighting Illini clinched the dual victory with a solid performance from Valdez. Valdez took the event title with a score of 15.200. Chandler Eggleston closed up the top five for the Illini with a score of 14.000.

Cameron Rogers, competing in all-around for the first time since 2011, scored 81.650.

"It's tough because we're not at full lineup strength, but for the most part we had a great showing," said Coach Spring. "I thought that Ohio State was going to get the better of us. The end of the meet was who wanted it more. As always, a lot of things to be happy about, and a lot of things to fix."

The Illini return to action next weekend in Minneapolis, Minn. The Orange and Blue will face Minnesota on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. CT.
