CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Freshman Charlie Danielson shot a team-best 3-under-par 68 and all four scores that Illinois counted were even-par or better on Friday, lifting the Illini into second place after two rounds at the Desert Shootout. The Orange and Blue carded a 6-under-par 278 to put them at 8-under for the tournament, one shot behind BYU's 9-under 559 at the par-71, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course.
Junior Thomas Pieters stands tied for second overall at -8, two shots back of individual leader Hunter Sparks (Wichita State), who is -10 after 36 holes. Senior Mason Jacobs is tied for 13th at -1 through 36 holes. The tournament's final round will go off with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT on Saturday.
"We were scuffling a little bit, then we made some good adjustments in the last six holes and went 6-under from there to get back into contention," Illinois head coach Mike Small said. "It was a total team effort. Charlie came back today strong with a 68, Thomas birdied three of his last five and the other guys made a lot of shots, too. I think we played from the rough a little bit too much today, but if we get our lines on our drivers a little better tomorrow, we can have a chance to win."
The Illini were much more solid than in the tournament's first round, as four players shot par or better in the round. In addition to Danielson's 68, Pieters shot a 69, sophomore Brian Campbell added a 1-under-par 70 and Jacobs carded an even-par 70 for a 278 on the day, the best score by any of the 16 teams in the field.
Freshmen Thomas Detry and David Kim each shot 1-over-par 72s on the day, to leave Detry tied for 21st at even-par for the tournament and Kim tied for 51st at +4.
