WINDERMERE, Fla. - No. 7 Illinois was back at full strength on day two of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational on Monday but wasn't as sharp as the first round, posting a 1-over-par 289. The Illini stayed in front of most of the pack but weren't able to keep up with the leaders, as they stand in fourth place at -3 overall, 21 shots behind tournament leader and top-ranked Alabama, which fired a 16-under 272 on the day and is -24 overall. UCF stands second at -13 and California is third at -6.
Junior Brian Campbell also sits in fourth after a 73, while sophomore David Kim jumped 12 spots to a tie for 27th with a 1-under 71. Alabama's Trey Mullinax remains atop the individual leaderboard at -10, while Crimson Tide teammate Bobby Wyatt fired a 67 to jump to second place at -8. UCF's Greg Eason is third at -7, followed by Campbell and five others at -4 overall. Illinois tees off in the final round Tuesday at 7:50 a.m. CT alongside UNLV and Florida State.
"We played solid golf but we could've done better," Illinois head coach Mike Small said. "We didn't do the things that we've been doing the last seven rounds. In relation to the entire field, it wasn't a bad day, but in relation to the leaders, it wasn't the best. We didn't play our strongest, but it wasn't a bad day by any means. It just wasn't our best.
For the second-straight round, Campbell birdied No. 1, then parred seven straight holes before a bogey at No. 10 left him even at the turn. He bogeyed the par-5 13th but recovered with a birdie at No. 17. But a bogey on the par-4 18th left him at +1 for the day.
Kim hit his stride early with birdies on Nos. 3, 5 and 7. A bogey on No. 9 left him at -2 at the turn, but he birdied No. 10 to get back to -3. A double-bogey on No. 12 dropped him back a bit, but he birdied the par-3 15th. A bogey on No. 17 left him at -1 for the day.
Sophomore Thomas Detry had an up-and-down day, birdying No. 1 but bogeying Nos. 4 and 5. He made the turn at +1 before bogeying No. 10 and birdying the par-3 11th. He birdied No. 14 to get back to even but a bogey on 18 meant he signed his card for a 73.
A day after missing the round with a back injury, Charlie Danielson was back in action and parred his first four holes. He bogeyed No. 5 but got it back with a birdie on the par-5 7th. But a double-bogey on No. 9 left him at +2 at the turn. After three consecutive pars, Danielson found a groove with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 to get back to even. He parred out from there for a 72.
After carding a 69 on Sunday, senior Jonathan Hauter struggled from the start in Monday's round, bogeying his first three holes before scratching out a birdie on the par-4 6th. But he bogeyed No. 8 and double-bogeyed No. 9 to turn at +5. Bogeys on Nos. 11, 12 and 18 left him with an 80.
