PITTSFORD, N.Y. - NCAA champion Thomas Pieters captured a second-straight tournament victory over the weekend, following up his individual national title with a win at the Monroe Invitational Championship (MIC) on Saturday. The Nijlen, Belgium, native won the event by one stroke after carding a 72-hole total of 8-under 272 (71-67-66-68). Rising senior Mason Jacobs tied for fourth overall with a 3-under 277 after rounds of 70-70-67-70.
Pieters entered the final round tied for the lead at 6-under with Alex Edfort of Pacific University. Edfort held a four-stroke advantage after 10 holes before Pieters came storming back over the next two holes. Edfort bogeyed 11 and 12, while Pieters birdied and eagled those holes to take a one shot lead. Both players parred out the remaining six holes, as Pieters maintained his lead to earn the 72nd annual MIC title.
The MIC, which is one of the oldest amateur tournaments in the United States dating back to 1937, was held at the Monroe Golf Club from June 13-16. Past notable champions of the MIC include Eric Compton, Chris DiMarco, Brent Delahoussaye, Dustin Johnson, Bill Lunde, Kyle Reifers, Michael Sim, Jeff Sluman and DJ Trahan.
